A number of variables go into determining a rate. These variables include:
- type of material (scholarly book, medical/science book, trade book)
- audience of the book (general public, professionals, students)
- page size and format of the page
- density of the material
- what is indexable material in addition to the text (footnotes, illustrations, tables,
figures)
- number of indexes involved (subject only, author, first line, etc.)
- turnaround time (rush jobs will likely require a higher rate per page)
A sample of the indexing project will aid in determining rates. This is preferably a copy of a chapter from the middle of the book. The sample can be emailed in PDF or Word format to karen@schmittindexing.com.
